The chair - Short Story

THE CHAIR
He no more cares that the chair has only three legs. From the past three years, he had learned to balance with its three legs. He used to fall down in the early days, but he had no choice. This is the only chair he got in the hostel. Day by day he and the chair came to know each other. He learned all his lessons by sitting on this chair and passed them all. Now, after three years, he uses it just like any other chair with all the legs. He never falls down nor did the chair let him fail an exam.

All of a sudden, one morning the management wants to replace the chair. He doesn't care it; after all it’s just a chair. He is just another guy like us. Why should he care? They are replacing the broken chair, even though he is quite comfortable with it. He doesn’t ask them, where were you for the past three years.

The new chair is a perfect one; he doesn't need any special skills to use it. So he used it just like a chair. He no more remembers the chair when he sits on it nor he remembers the lessons when he writes the exam. He used the chair like any ordinary chair and learns the lesson as usual, but he fails. So he asked the management to return his old broken chair. They refused. They said a broken chair is useless and if you want to study the new chair will be more comfortable. What they said was true. It gave him comfort, but he never passed another exam.

One day the management called for him. They said- you are unable to pass the exams. You have a new chair. Then, why are you failing in all the exam? He said nothing. He has no reasons. He was asked to pass all the exams next time. He went on as usual. There is nothing that is to be changed as he is doing his best, except the old chair. So he asked for his old chair. But they didn't give it. They want him to pass all the exam, but they didn't want to return his old chair. They believed the new one is better for him, as it had all the four legs. He learned and learned and failed.

The management again called him and scolded him. They said they will chuck him out if he failed again. He again asked for his old chair. But they didn't listen to him and left him to do with his new chair. So he did it. He knows this is not right but this is his necessity. He asked but didn't get it, so it’s his turn to take it. It’s a matter of survival. There is no other thing to do. Yes, he broke his new chair's leg. Now he got his broken chair like the old one he had. Every thing went as usual.
He learned as he did earlier. And the management never called for him again.
